Two prescriptions in one lens

What are bifocal lenses?

Bifocal lenses provide two different prescriptions in one lens. Traditionally, the upper area is used for distance vision and the clearly defined lower segment is used for reading.

Unlike varifocals, the change between the two prescriptions is immediate, with a visible segment separating the viewing areas.

Clear vision for the tasks that matter

Distance and reading — or an occupational combination

Bifocals can be configured for everyday distance and near vision or, where suitable, for specific working distances.

D28 and C28 segments

A familiar bifocal design, tailored to your needs

D28 is the most commonly selected bifocal segment, with a flat-topped reading area measuring approximately 28mm across.

C28 lenses are also available at exactly the same price. Where you already wear bifocals, we can use your existing lenses and prescription details to help us reproduce a suitable result.

Frequently asked questions

Questions before you order

What are bifocal lenses?

Bifocal lenses contain two prescriptions in one lens, usually distance vision through the main lens and reading vision through a visible lower segment.

What is the difference between bifocals and varifocals?

Bifocals provide two clearly defined prescriptions with a visible segment. Varifocals change gradually between distance, intermediate and reading vision without a visible line.

What is a D28 bifocal lens?

D28 is a common flat-top bifocal design with a reading segment measuring approximately 28mm across.

Can I choose C28 lenses instead?

Yes. C28 lenses are available at the same price as D28 lenses.

Can bifocals be made for computer and reading use?

In some cases, bifocals can be configured as an occupational design with intermediate vision in the main lens and a closer reading prescription in the lower segment. Suitability depends on your prescription and intended use.

How much do bifocal replacement lenses cost?

Standard 1.5 index D28 or C28 bifocal lenses start from £31.50 uncoated, £40.50 with Ultra Tough and £49.50 with Ultra Enhanced. Thinner 1.6 and 1.67 options are also available.

Can I add anti-reflection coating?

Yes. Ultra Enhanced lenses include scratch resistance and anti-reflection coating.

Can I add tinted, polarised or Transitions® lenses?

Yes. Tint and UV is available for an additional £12. Polarised and Transitions® upgrades are available for an additional £50.

Do you check my order before making the lenses?

Yes. An experienced member of our optical team reviews the supplied prescription, lens choices and frame information. We will contact you if anything needs clarification.

Can you reglaze my existing bifocal glasses?

Yes, provided the frame is in suitable condition and has enough lens depth for the required bifocal segment. Every frame is inspected before work begins.

How do I send you my glasses?

After ordering, we send you a protective pack with instructions and a prepaid UK postage label so you can return your glasses securely.

How long does bifocal reglazing take?

Completion time depends on the selected lens and any specialist options. You will be kept informed if an order requires additional manufacturing time.
